The coastal area located in front of the Volturno river's estuary (Gulf of Gaeta, central-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea) has been synoptically sampled during seven surveys, between June 2012 and October 2014. The vertical profiles of temperature and salinity have been acquired on a high resolution nearly-regular grid, in order to describe the spatial and temporal variability of the water masses characteristics. Cavitation is a relevant phenomenon for structural safety and noise level in hydraulic turbines, occurring when water pressure falls below the vapor value at a given temperature. In this case bubbles of vapor grow inside the liquid and move along with it. When the pressure returns above the vapor value the bubble collapses, and the pressure can locally achieve very high values, up to 7000 bars (Kumar & Saini, 2010). Study of the performances of a fluidynamic actuator

Aim of this paper is presented a new methodology to study how different geometric parameters affect the performance of a hydraulic actuator. Preliminarily, the real working conditions of a hydraulic machine have been simulated by means of a CFD module. After, to test the reliability of the simulations, the obtained numerical results have been compared with the experimental data of a real prototype. This comparison demonstrates a good level of agreement between numerical and experimental results. New fitting scheme to obtain effective potential from Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations: Application to silica

A fitting scheme is proposed to obtain effective potentials from Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations. It is used to parameterize a new pair potential for silica. MD simulations with this new potential are done to determine structural and dynamic properties and to compare these properties to those obtained from CPMD and a MD simulation using the so-called BKS potential. The new potential reproduces accurately the liquid structure generated by the CPMD trajectories, the experimental activation energies for the self-diffusion constants and the experimental density of amorphous silica. Wind tunnel study on the size distribution of droplets after collision induced breakup of levitating water drops

Abstract Wind tunnel experiments on collisions between drop pairs of 2.5 and 0.5 mm diameter have been performed and the coalescence and breakup events have been recorded by a high-speed digital camera. From the comprehensive analysis of the captured images, the most important parameters utilized in numerical models, such as coalescence efficiency, breakup type, number of fragments and fragment size distribution after breakup were determined. The effect of geometrical parameters on the discharge capacity of meandering compound channels

A number of methods and formulae has been proposed in the literature to estimate the discharge capacity of compound channels. When the main channel has a meandering pattern, a reduction in the conveyance capacity for a given stage is observed, which is due to the energy dissipations caused by the development of strong secondary currents and to the decrease of the main channel bed slope with respect to the valley bed slope.
